Ty Johnson-Anderson on Writing and Moving On @invisible_soror #Abuse #AmReading

What’s your greatest character strength?
I would say its creativity. I have a knack at looking at something dissecting and figuring out a way to get there or recreate it, although I don’t always follow through. But that’s what left-brain individuals are for.
What’s your weakest character trait?
Definitely perfectionism and follow through. I always have so much going on that I often do not tend to finish anything. I get a spark of creativity, immerse myself in it, and lose interest. And if it’s not perfect, I get upset with myself a lot.
Why do you write?
I write to inspire survivors of sexual assault with my story. As survivors, we often walk around in our own little bubble thinking we are alone in our plight. And we aren’t. I want them to know, there are other Invisible Sorority members among us and we need to step out of the shadow of guilt and support one another.
Have you always enjoyed writing?
I used writing as a way escape reality. As a small child I was bullied a lot so I stayed to myself. I would retreat into my closet and sit with a notebook and just write, mostly poetry at that time. Over the years writing escaped me as it was more work related and school related. I didn’t have the time to write recreationally. And honestly, when I compared my writing to others, in my mind I never measured up; so I stopped. I am writing now to inspire other women to believe there is light at the end of whatever tunnel they may be walking through.
What motivates you to write?
I write to inspire survivors of sexual assault with my story. As survivors, we often walk around in our own little bubble thinking we are alone in our plight. And we aren’t. I want them to know, there are other Invisible Sorority members among us and we need to step out of the shadow of guilt and support one another.
What are you most proud of in your personal life?
I would have to say my daughter. My husband and I had a hard time initially conceiving, so after a yearlong deployment we tried again, and BAM! She lights up my soul.
Who is your favorite author?
I don’t really have a favorite, but some of my first books were of Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou.
What do you hope your obituary will day about you?
That I affected change, and raised a successful and social conscious daughter. If that’s all it says, I would be ecstatic.
Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live?
I currently reside in Edgewood Maryland, but I am from Annapolis Maryland.
What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing?
For me it is the ideas and getting them on paper. I self-published so publishing was just a matter of researching the “how”. Marketing is a horse of another color. I have yet to crack that egg. I am working on that though.
Do you find it hard to share your work?
Absolutely, opening yourself up to criticism is a vulnerable experience. And with the personal nature of my book I worry about the stigma that may be perceived about me. In addition, I often think about what others my think about the choices I made in my past situation. However, I get over this by focusing on the women I will help with my story instead.
